Can you use
the same towel
for face & body?
Why is it advised to use a different towel for your face and your body?
We have said it before, we will say it again. Washing your face is the most important step in any skincare routine. A lot of attention is focused on the best ways to wash your face. So much so that face wash is the fastest growing category in the skincare industry. But what about the best ways to dry your skin? The type of face towel you use to dry your face is more important than you think.
Is a separate towel for your face really necessary?
The skin on your face is delicate and sensitive. None of the oils and products used on your body should be transferred to your face.
Can you use the same towel for your face and your body? The short answer, no. A separate towel for your face should be used to the one you use to dry your body.
It is not just about bacteria or cleanliness, but the products we use on our body, such as moisturisers, fragrances and hair products can potentially end up on your skin. This can lead to clogged pores and an increase in breakouts or even skin irritation.
What about bacteria?
Any type of towel can host bacteria. Bacteria, fungi, dead skin cells, oils and dirt can all accumulate on a towel. This can potentially lead to skin infections or skin irritations.
How often should you replace your towels?
It is important to not only have a separate towel but to also replace it with a clean towel every few days. Especially if you are prone to breakouts.
Make sure to have your towels dry out completely in-between uses. This applies to your face and body towels. It might mean you have to move your towel to somewhere where it is warmer and perhaps have fresh air.
Towels that are kept in a bathroom where multiple people have a shower in one day, the towels can remain damp and can accumulate moisture that can cause mold or yeast to grow.
What if you already have an infection?
This is a very important question. If you already have an active infection, you will not want the bacteria to spread to your face.
If your towel becomes soiled with dirt or makeup you should not continue to use the towel. It is best to replace the towel with a clean one.
Where should you store your towels?
Replacing your towels with a clean set frequently is just as important as to where you store your towels. It is advised to store your towel where it is able to fully dry away from moisture.
Standard towels can be swoped out for healthier options. Cleansing cloths are gentle and soothing for the skin. So, with that being said, you should think twice before using the same towel for your face and your body.
